Harbingers’ Magazine is the world’s only professional publication run by teenagers, and for teenagers.
Our global, digital and industry–recognised editorial enables teenagers from over 40 countries to have a great time while safely exploring the world with the privilege and responsibility that come with the press card, learning the skills, practising the values, developing an outstanding portfolio for university applications, and laying the foundation of their public profile.
Every year, the work of teenagers creating Harbingers’ is recognised by recruiters at the world’s leading universities our writers, editors, and managers are at Brown, Cambridge, Columbia, Cornell, Chicago, Dartmouth, Georgetown, Imperial, LSE, Oxford, Princeton, St Andrews, Stanford, UC Berkeley, UCL, Yale and more.
Supported by professionals
The Harbingers’ Project is a team of award–winning journalists, editors, broadcasters, creatives, and professionals— lawyers, PR and public-appearance experts, web developers, social media managers, among others who have made it their mission to guide the next generation in their first professional space: the editorial of Harbingers’ Magazine.
We invite you to become our colleague and partner. In the way we work, it is we who shadow you, so you make your decisions, but with a professional’s support. This way, you can take responsibility, learn skills, and practise values both online and while travelling.
The Oxford School for the Future
Harbingers’ Magazine is published by the Oxford School for the Future, a not–for–profit company launched in 2021 in the UK to empower and connect the next generation of leaders through education strategy, performance, public image and career planning expertise.
Career paths
Harbingers’ accepts applications from students in full–time, pre-university education. Our programmes are designed for those aged 14 and older, with a good command of English; but we do our best to accommodate diverse needs and foster unique voices.
Writers: Every new member of the newsroom starts as a Contributor. On average, progression from Contributor to Writer takes six weeks. Subsequent Writer, Senior Writer, and Correspondent/Columnist programmes each take a full academic year (30-40 sessions). All Writer’s path programmes include work with multimedia forms (podcasts, camera work, media presence).
Editors: New members of the Editorial Board are nominated every year in February. The Editorial Board is open to those at Senior Writer level and above, and consists of two programmes: Editor and Section Editor. Each level takes about a year (30–40 sessions) to complete. Please note that Section Editor and Editor–in–Chief positions are extremely selective.
Creatives, professionals & managers: A media project is not limited to text–related careers. We have a broad range of mentored positions in various areas across creative (illustrators, camera operators, video editors, sound engineers, etc.), professional (legal, PR, HR, etc.), and management (including senior–executive roles) departments.
If you’re not sure whether an editorial office is the right place for you (which is understandable), please bear in mind that journalism and related fields create a highly transferable skillset that will make you stand out regardless of what you plan to do in the future. Well, unless someone aspires to live the life of an NPC, in which case there are certainly better places to support them than ours.
Workload
Pursuing each career path requires, on average, one hour for an online session, plus one hour of self–work per week. Additional sessions may
be needed when we work on time–sensitive material or when you fall behind on your editorial obligations; you can accelerate your progression.
Contributors (quarterly), as well as Writers, Senior Writers, and Editors (annually), may take a theoretical and practical exam to receive a certificate of completion.
Safeguarding
We operate a robust, state–of–the–art safeguarding policy to ensure you will learn and explore safely. All our mentors undergo full background checks, have industry–standard NSPCC safeguarding training, and we constantly refine our procedures.
